The Oregon Trail...

-97-

After opting not to ford any rivers, easily saving approximately 562 lbs of food and the lives of my oxen and wagon team members, the Oregon trail has safely delivered Ellen & me to the left coast! Well, actually I've been here for about 2 months now, but it still feels like I'm the new guy in town. At the moment, I'm working in the consulting arm of the wind energy industry. Basically, I'm the guy who helps wind farm developers estimate each site's potential to generate electricity based on a bunch of factors like wind speed, type of wind turbine model, etc, etc. I'm totally enjoying the job and the atmosphere out here in Portland, Oregon. I even had an opportunity to visit THE Kirk & Kim Strohman down in Eugene where we found a fantastic place to drink beers together! It's nice to know that there's a little Buckeye/Sphinx love just an hour away from me.

Anyway, I thought I'd send along my regards to everyone....My new address here in Portland is:

Dan Jaynes
1535 SW Clay St.
#234
Portland, OR 97201
614-264-5454 (I'm still hanging on to my old 614 number!)

I've noticed that an awful lot of us have moved recently, so if you haven't sent around you new contact info, then please do so! Also, I just discovered that I actually did get football tickets for a game this year, next week's game versus Wisconsin, so if anyone is going to be around, then gimme a call and we'll get together for some beers!

*jammers

Ps- Please say hi to my new dog Nolan. Named after the lovely Mikal Eversole Nolan. Not really, but if I were slightly more creepy, this could be the case. He's an Australian Cattle dog that Ellen and I found at the humane society last week. He's crazy and he makes things very interesting around the homestead....Come on out and meet him next time you're out in the pacific NW area!

Signs Everywhere

Not sure if there's deeper meaning here, but Uma and I found this sign in the Minneapolis airport... Wishing everyone well,

Hello from the Willamette Valley

Just wanted to pass along a friendly hello from my new digs out west. Kim and I completed the 3000 mile journey in a Penske truck towing our car and our dalmatian Lincoln riding right between us in the cab. It was an adventure, but it never ceases to amaze me how awesome it can be to drive across this country...even the seemingly endless Nebraska.

We have found housing for now, but are hoping to buy a place soon. The weather is amazing right now and I can't wait for us to get unpacked enough to start exploring the coast and the mountains all within an hour's drive. There won't be too much time, however, as Oregon Law School orientation starts next week! Wow. I can't believe that I'm finally just getting around to getting back to school and Josh has already secured a Masters and has reclaimed SAC.

Upon leaving DC I was given the opportunity to have a departure photo with the President. My whole family came in and walked right into the Oval and chatted with GWB for a few minutes...including discussing Graeters Ice Cream. It was pretty neat and hopefully we will have pictures soon. I must say it is a little weird being totally out of the loop and not having access to the latest national security intelligence whenever I want...but I think I'll manage.

Here's hoping that Jammers makes it out here soon and other links follow.

Best,

Kirk

Josh is a Baller....

SAC WELCOMES NEW ADVISOR

July 30, 2007

Contact: David MacLean
Maclean.32@osu.edu

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Student-Alumni Council (SAC) would like to welcome Josh Harraman as its new advisor. Josh started in his new role as director of student programs for the Ohio State University Alumni Association (OSUAA) on July 23. Josh holds a bachelor of arts degree from The Ohio State University in history as well as a Masters from Bowling Green State University. Josh brings a varied background to the position and has demonstrated his excellent advising and program development ability in several previous positions.

Most recently Josh served as the program coordinator for student organization development at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where his main duties involved overseeing the Student Organization Resource Center as well as collaborating with other university departments to provide resources for student organizations. After graduating from Ohio State in June of 2004, Josh worked in Greek affairs at Bowling Green State University where he held positions ranging from graduate intern to graduate advisor for the Interfraternity Council and coordinator of fraternity expansion.

Most important, however, Josh is a Buckeye and a SACer at heart. He is an alumnus of SAC who served on the executive board as vice president of programming. Josh was also the Homecoming King in 2003 and chaired Welcome Week. Josh’s experiences at Ohio State while an undergraduate and in his professional career are evidence that he is a perfect candidate for the position and will work hard to further SAC’s mission as well as its vision for the university.

The Student-Alumni Council is a student advancement organization dedicated to serving Ohio State students past, present, and future through the support and coordination of university and Alumni Association events. A member of the Association for Student Advancement Programs (ASAP) and its parent organization, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), SAC strives to advance The Ohio State University through programs that enhance the student experience, promote student-alumni interaction, and establish a spirit of loyalty to the university.

Cajun South is actually where it's at...

...and by "it" I mean humidity!

I wanted to let all of you know that I just moved down to New Orleans (NOLA) last week to start law school in a couple weeks here at Tulane! I would have posted something sooner, but there was quite a bit of uncertainty with the move, as I had a truck reserved to make the drive but no housing set up to arrive at, ha! It's difficult looking for housing from a distance, plus people in NOLA tend to post rental openings when they become available or maybe a couple weeks before. But it's all good - I found a great house within walking distance to the school, and one of the roommates is also an OSU grad!

Right now I'm just spending my days unpacking and making sure everything is in order before classes start. My nights have been a different story... I've been out with some of the other 1L's the last 3 nights until anytime between 3:00-4:30 in the morning... and any of those could easily have gone later! When there's no stupid law about bars closing at a certain time or having open containers outside, that changes all the rules! I've been to several bars and restaurants around campus and the French Quarter, to the house that will likely become a weekly party destination, and to an event called White Linen night... art galleries open their doors and there's live music and drinks and food... it was reminiscent of Gallery Hop, and great for people watching: I've already been inspired to purchase a seersucker suit for dressy occasions or even moot court!

I hope each (all??) of you will be able to visit down here... I'll be around for at least 3 years, so there's plenty of time. And I've heard whisperings of a possible advance to the Big Easy next spring, so let me know if you're up for that and I'll make sure the city is ready for you!

I hope everyone is doing well. SPHINX Love,

-DT

Gordon Gee is Ohio State's 14th President

"This is the university of the American dream"

Gordon Gee is one of the most recognizable leaders in higher education, known for his energetic personal style, his quirky sense of humor, his advocacy of public education, and his fund-raising prowess.

This fall, he'll bring all of those traits to The Ohio State University.

On Thursday, trustees hired Gee as the university's 14th president. Gee said he looks forward to being "part of the most exciting academic environment in higher education."

"This is Ohio State's time," Gee said. "This is the university of the American dream."

Gee's hire marked something unprecedented: the return of a beloved president. He led Ohio State from 1990 to 1997. Since then, the university has become more competitive, thanks in part to the selective admissions process Gee started.

"My heart told me what to do and that's what I did," he said, explaining why he decided to come back to Ohio State. "This was a pure and simple spiritual decision for me, and it was the right decision."

"Gordon Gee reflected the Buckeye spirit, that sense of pride recognized by more than 400,000 alumni across the world," said trustee Alex Schumate.

Gee and Ohio State both have changed since his departure a decade ago, he and trustees agreed.

"This is not Back to the Future," Gee said.

Welcome back, President Gee!

E. Gordon Gee to return as OSU president
Wednesday, July 11, 2007 1:06 PM
The Columbus Dispatch

Gee in 2003 as Vanderbilt University's chancellor

Gee at a glance

  • E. Gordon Gee
  • Age: 63
  • Hometown: Vernal, Utah
  • Experience: Led five universities: Vanderbilt, 2000-present; Brown, 1998-2000; Ohio State, 1990-97; University of Colorado, 1985-90; West Virginia, 1981-85

E. Gordon Gee will be returning to Ohio State University as its next president.

Gee confirmed that he would be leaving Vanderbilt University in a letter to that school's community today.

“I am following my heart and returning to a place that I consider my home,” Gee said in the letter. “My decision is that simple and that complex.”

He will leave Vanderbilt Aug. 1.

The Ohio State board is expected to vote on its choice on Thursday.

Gee, 63, has been chancellor of Vanderbilt since 2000 and was Ohio State's president from 1990 through ‘97.

Ohio State's board of trustees have been trying to lure him back for months.

Gee released a statement in late June saying that he planned to stay at Vanderbilt for “a long time to come” and that he was not a candidate for Ohio State's presidency. But he added that OSU always would be “a special place to me.”

Sources said OSU trustees, however, were continuing to negotiate with him and had offered him a $1 million compensation package. His compensation at Vanderbilt is more than $1.2 million.

Gee will follow Karen A. Holbrook, who retired as OSU president June 30. She had announced her plans to leave a year ago.

Vanderbilt board chairman Martha R. Ingram today said she wishes Gee well in his new endeavors.

A 24-member search committee has been looking for a new president since September, aided by the national search firm Heidrick & Struggles.

At Vanderbilt, a private university in Nashville, Tenn., Gee got national attention when he disbanded the athletic department, did away with the athletics-director job and gave the office of Student Life and University Affairs control over sports. Naysayers predicted Vanderbilt's teams would fail, but they have flourished.

In his seven years at Vanderbilt, Gee has lifted the school's academic standing and raised more than $1 billion.

During his seven years at OSU, the university started some of its largest building projects, including the $93 million Schottenstein Center, $92 million Fisher College of Business and an $80 million renovation of Ohio Stadium. Gee also trimmed enrollment from 50,000 to 48,000, worked to attract and keep better students, and pushed to increase state funding for colleges.

New President?

Word on the street is that Gordon Gee is coming back to OSU to be president. Can anyone confirm this? I'll bet T knows. She's on the inside.

I dig his bow ties.

Pac Northwest is where it's at.

97,

I wanted to let everyone know that I'm planning on moving to Portland, OR in a few weeks after I finish my graduate program in Massachusetts. I accepted a job with a wind energy consulting/development firm so I'll be workin' for the man! Ellen is going to come with me too so she's out looking for jobs at the moment. Both of us finish our respective programs in early/mid August.

I plan on starting the job around early or mid September so if you're in the Pac NW anytime in the future, then you certainly have a couch to sleep on!

Anyway, I'll be in Cbus for a few days during the last part of August, so if anyone is around and wants to get together for some drinks, then keep me in mind!

Yes, Mikal is a bad ass...

If you doubt anything Jammers said in his post (I mean, who believes that kid anyway?), here are some pics to prove it. It was an awesome weekend in Maine! Thanks Mikal for showing Jammers, the wind turbine loving enginerd, and me, the city girl who CAN go without her crackberry for an entire weekend, how Mainers really do what they do. I must admit, I have never loved a shower more than the way I did when I got home Sunday night, but had a blast despite my stankiness. Or was that Jammers? I can never tell. For the rest of you - if you ever want to wander way up northeast for a weekend, Mikal may be there a little longer, so get your act together and let's go!

PS: don't listen to Jammers about my GPS..."TomTom". He's British and he's fabulous. And he only got us lost in the ghetto of Maine once.

Mikal is a bad ass.

So T and I went up to coastal Maine last weekend to visit Mikal in her new surroundings as a wannabe "Mainer." It was pretty sweet. We had the chance to go hiking, hang out on the coast, drink a lot, build fires, roast marshmallows, make fun of T's automated GPS navigation system, experience Maine beer, eat fresh lobster, etc etc. The farm animals were pretty sweet too. Mikal seriously lives in a shack. I can't make this shit up.

I don't have any photos to share right now, but those will be coming soon (courtesey of Mikal Eversole and T-Satchel)...

What I can share with all of you is this random newspaper article that I found online whilst Googling Mikal's middle name to determine if it has a 'e' in it or not.

Check it out: here

The 97 Compilation for the 100th

97! So this is way late in coming, but I’ve been a busy guy. I asked for you to provide the soundtrack for the celebration of the 101st class. The theme was to think back to our days on campus and send along any song that brings you back to old Columbus town. You responded with a few songs about home, a couple about moms, and plenty of great memories. There is not a song from everyone, and more than one from a few. The creation is 2 compilations, 28 songs in all, to remind you of our good times as a Buckeye, your fellow links, and that weekend 4 (holy shit! four whole years!) years after we all came together for the first time…and then all managed to come back together one more time. It was a truly excellent weekend. I thank you all for making the effort to return to our “second home” and most of all, I thank you for you friendship. Let me know if you still need a copy of the compilation.

Disc One

1. Lit Up – Buckcherry

Our favorite Bolivian PCV made me promise to include this one. Ben used to pop this song in as we cruised around campus in “White Rice”. It did not take long before this song became our theme for riding to Sphinx meetings together. Best played very loud!

2. Who Says You Can’t Go Home – Bon Jovi (featuring Jennifer Nettles)

This one comes straight from Maine…thanks to Mikal Nolan for the perfect anthem for this past weekend.

3. Hey Ya – Outkast

This one got a mention from Ms. Buker and I grabbed it for the mix because it also would have been a pick from our Bolivian PCV’s dad. Yep, Joe Ranz digs Outkast and he was in the Homecoming Parade with 97, so here you have it!

4. Shake Ya Tail Feather – Nelly

This song would have most certainly been the K-Mart pick had she any recollection of the night she made the title phrase famous during our advance to Wisconsin. The game, well it was wet and cold and we lost. But Kristi totally redeemed it all with a mischievous/drunken grin and that little whisper “Shake your tail feather.”

5. Hot in Herre – Nelly

This is one more that was just played so many times during our college days and so nicely rounded out a solid hip-hop section on the mix. It also delivers a solid message to young college girls everywhere.

6. Dancing in the Moonlight – Toploader

Yes, this song has appeared on a Sphinx mix before (Wisconsin Advance Disc 2 for those of you keeping score at home), BUT this song IS Kerry Buker and as she so appropriately noted, it became even more so after that Wisconsin mix. I know I will never be able to hear this song without imagining Buker tearing up the dance floor.

7. Hold My Hand – Hootie and the Blowfish

OK, so I had to get in my Hootie! To me this song is just classic and full of all kinds of hope and friendship. It became one of my favorite Hootie songs when Ranz and I went to see them live at the Fraze in Dayton for my birthday freshman year and they played this last in the encore…f-ing sweet.

8. Second Home – O.A.R.

Just the perfect song for the weekend. As Frank put it when he sent it to me, “Listen to the lyrics.”

9. The Joker – Steve Miller Band

Thanks to Josh for calling out this one for inclusion on the mix. Fantastic song to sing really loud at a party when you are wasted and as Josh mentioned, “I think every time I was at 4 kegs or walking past it, this song was on.”

10. Home – Marc Broussard

Jammers is all full of blues with this pick. Obviously a solid pick for a weekend at, well, home. I think that this song becomes Tynan’s theme song when he lands in New Orleans this fall. I call Tynan’s couch for Mardi Gras 2008!

11. In the Sun – Joseph Arthur

A little something to slow things down…thanks Gosnell!

12. We’re Going to Be Friends – The White Stripes

This is a classic brought to us by Mikal Nolan, and I believe it was also featured on the Ranz Sphinx Slide Show.

13. History Repeating – Propellerheads & Miss Shirley Bassey

Thanks to everyone’s favorite music educator from 97 for introducing us to one that I bet wasn’t already in your play list.

14. Sphinx Song (The Original) – Mizzelder

I mean, seriously, has there ever been another point in your life where you knew someone that wrote a song and lyrics and performed that song right in front of all of those people that the song was about? Honestly? Have you ever even heard of someone doing something that cool? Ever? Of course not. Elder = Awesome. Thanks to Tynan for ensuring this one did not get overlooked.

DISC TWO

1. Hey Girl – O.A.R.

Nothing like one more dose of this Columbus favorite to kick of the second CD. Specht provided the suggestion and I think the song is awesome and I can’t even begin to count the number of times I rocked out to this one driving up and down 71 from Cincinnati.

2. Amsterdam – Guster

So here, I must come clean. First of all it must be said how awesome this song is. I saw Guster live in DC a couple of months back and my night was made as soon as they played this song. I have great memories of going to see Guster after the inaugural Rock the Block. But, I digress from the real explanation necessary here. Sarah Elder picked an incredibly thoughtful song with a great memory attached – All I Want for Christmas is You by Mariah Carey. As Sarah pointed out, that song brings you straight back the Sasso Christmas bash. We decided that for the sake of the mix, Guster was the right fit, but this one definitely deserved a mention.

3. Ignition (Remix) – R. Kelly

Right now stop everything you are doing and go find the video online of the crazy Asian kids at Duke making this song so freaking hilarious. Multiple Links requested this one and I must admit it was at the top of my own list.

4. Stacey’s Mom – Fountain of Wayne

Had Nate sent in a song this would have been it. Instead like five others recommended it for him. How come all I can seem to think about right now is Ranz without a shirt on?

5. When You Were Young – The Killers

Another from Spechtacular. Solid.

6. Take Your Mama – Scissor Sisters

I had never heard this, but it totally bums me out that it took long of my life before I did. This is such a fun song. Thanks Gosnell! And word to your respective mothers.

7. Flying Horses – Dispatch
Becky Tippett called in this song because it brings her straight back to the dorms in Lincoln Tower. Dispatch is one of those bands I discovered while is college as well. Check them out if you haven’t already.

8. Let Go – Frou Frou

Hooray for Uma passing along this solid tune. I think you might be able to find it on the Garden State soundtrack, but it sounds to me like a Grey’s Anatomy cut…Speaking of which, did anyone see the season finale??!!? Is Burke gone for good? What is going to happen to George? And is Meredith’s half-sister going to steal McDreamy? I’m not sure if I’ll be able to make it through the summer.

9. Piano Man – Billy Joel

Let’s hear is straight from T: At the Mirrors dance senior year (my first), I came running in late because of some random prior engagement. "Piano Man" came on as soon as I came in and I was immediately pulled into the circle of 97 by one link or another before I even had time to put my stuff down. Everyone greeted me with a big "T!!" and we proceeded with our off-key, yet fabulous, swaying rendition of the song. It's silly, but always what I think about when I hear the song - standing in the ballroom at The Blackwell, looking all snazzy and swaying in a circle of 97 to this song. This was before our spring quarter of madness and when people got really close and we would sing this every chance we got...this was the beginning....

10. Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters – Elton John

This became the song of the swaying circle. I cannot listen to this without hearing Ranz at the part where he sings “…Good morning to the night” and then the notes on the piano that Ben would sing when he was rather intoxicated “boop boop beep boop booo!!!”

11. Seasons of Love – Rent Soundtrack

I never got the chance to see Rent, but I remember everyone going on trips through the dorm to go see it and people listening to the music in Bradley Hall. But this song isn’t for my memories, Dave Tynan called in this one as a must for the mix of OSU memories.

12. Time to Say Goodbye – Andrea Bocelli & Sarah Brightman

This one came in from a few people. Well, now it is just one more thing to remind me of how I missed the trip to Vegas…but I digress. So the crew was standing outside of the Bellagio watching the amazing fountain show as this song played…A moment that became an instant memory. Who’s planning Sphinx Takes Vegas II??

13. Hang on Sloop – The McCoys

The official rock and roll song of the State of Ohio. If this doesn’t make you think Ohio State…well, never mind, of course it does.

14. Carmen Ohio – Cie Grant

I still can’t believe that I was going to a school when it won the NCAA football championship. What an amazing season with so many great memories. This sums them all up with a great rendition of the Alma Mater by one of the team’s great players. Thanks to Cindy for making sure we had this one to wrap it all up. How firm thy friendship…no doubt. All the best!

The Sphinx Tattoo

So I'm finally starting to download my photos from last weekend and I came across this one of someone's Sphinx tattoo on their ass. I'm not sure if you noticed at first glance, but that's Goz in the picture as well. She's about as excited as I was when I saw this at the linking party. Does anyone know who this is? We need to give them an award or something. We flirted with the idea of tattoos when we were in Vegas, but this guy obviously went through with it! Sphinx 97 lauds this display of dedication to Shinpx.

One of my favorite Ben Ranz quotes

As Uma and I are preparing to pull away from the Holiday Inn, this crazy, screaming mop of black curls comes running our way. J. Ben was coming fast & furious to say his goodbyes before we shoved off. Having just driven into the parking lot himself, our clean water crusader didn't have time to grab his keys and still catch Uma & I. So, as any dedicated, safety-conscious friend would do, Ben locked his car (with the keys securely inside).

After some creative maneuvering through the sunroof with a coat hanger - remember, Ben does have a mechanical engineering degree - we were able to pull the keys to safety without a fumble. Ben's reaction, "I can't wait to tell my friends in Bolivia about this... they're gonna be like, 'why did you lock your car'?"

Sphinx Song 3.0

By: Sarah Elder

Any attempt on my part to express how much I loved this weekend would absolutely fall short. So instead, I will let my music speak for me as we artists do.

And just as a sidenote, Murph ganked the final version of the lyrics from me. I'm thinking she was looking for a one-of-a-kind souvineer, but she'll probably respond to this with some kind of "explanation." Anyway, this is from the rough copy, so there may be slight variations from what you heard during the Live at Orton performance, but the sentiment is still the same...

SPHINX love,
Sarah
------------------------
So I’m sitting on the plane, and it’s just minutes before take-off
I’m wondering why I made this crazy plea
But everyone chipped in, so time to hold on to your belts, kids
Here we go—it’s the SPHINX song, version 3

Katy has a new last name
Not Cindy Cryder—she kept hers the same
Zach is getting his MBA
Mikal might have running water someday

CHORUS
You gotta love SPHINX
The 97th class, all 26 links!
You gotta love SPHINX
(2x)

Tippett’s working on her PhD
In Chi-town, so is Bobby T.
Kirk works in the OEOB
Tynan’s gonna get a law degree
(so he can pursue his life dream of becoming Brad Meyers!)

CHORUS

Molly does lacrosse—go Skywalkers!
Santilli’s teaching the future rockers
Elder’s still teaching science—that’s fine
It’s my song, so I get another line

CHORUS

Gos’ll be a doc in a year or two
Not Nate—he’s got six more to do
The teacher has become the student (Lenore)
Uma’s gonna have to listen to Frank snore
(Forever! Because they’re engaged! 5 second applause break for Frank and Uma!)

CHORUS

Sam is stylin’ in New York
Buker still does not eat pork
Ranz lives in the third world, Bolivia
Unlike Upper East Sider Bagolivia

CHORUS

Spechtacular works in climate change
Josh makes his home out on the range
Kristi will soon be a resident
I say Dan Jaynes for president
(Who’s with me? Jammers 08! Jammers 08! Jammers 08!)
